JCB is a well-known brand, but how much do you really know about it?

What is JCB?

In England, JCB is slang for just about any type of construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, and track loaders. However, JCB is actually an international leader in the design and manufacturing of off-road construction equipment.

What Does JCB Stand For?

JCB stands for J.C. Bamford Excavators Limited and it was named after its founder, Joseph Cyril Bamford. J.C. Bamford was many things: British engineer, Brylcreem salesman, British engineer, marketing expert, and businessman. He built the JCB company and turned it into a construction equipment empire based on innovation, hard work, quality, and investment in ever-evolving manufacturing technologies. J.C.Bamford was also responsible for the now iconic black and yellow color scheme ( originally adopted in 1951) and was the mind behind the “JCB Dancing Diggers.”

How Was JCB Founded?

JCB Mini-Excavator

JCB was founded in 1945 in Staffordshire, England. It started out in a 10’ x 15’ garage following unsucessful stints working for his father and selling Brylcreem door-to-door. Undaunted by his previous setbacks, J.C. Bamford began manufacturing agricultural tipping trailers (one at a time, with both the design and manufacture accomplished by himself) and then selling them at a local market.

Three years later, Bamford had 6 employees and ta new line of  hydraulic tipping trailers called Si-draulics. From there, the company grew into the manufacturing leader we know today. In fact, their one millionth machine was built in 2013.

Anything  Interesting about the Logo?

The original JCB logo first appeared on their equipment in 1953. Then, in 1960, the company had an extra key was added to the typewriters so that the logo could be rendered more accurately. Note that the original logo was angled exactly 18 degrees from the horizontal and 22 degrees from the vertical.

What Role Has JCB Played in Pop Culture?

According to a Wikipedia article on the JCB company, JCB equipment has made numerous appearances in modern pop culture, including TV appearances like Teletubbies, Top Gear, and Primeval. JCB equipment has been immortalized in at least three different songs and appeared in a music video.

What Does JCB Manufacture Today?

JCB manufactures agricultural, government & defense, and construction equipment. This includes excavators, wheel loaders, tractors, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, forklifts, telehandlers, backhoes, site dumpers, and military loadalls. In addition, JBC also manufactures diesel engines.
