Final Drive Cores — The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Final Drive Cores and Used Final Drives

When you purchased a used final drive, that means you are buying a final drive that someone else decided to replace.

Four Final Drive Cores

When a final drive is sent in as a core, it’s usually because that final drive is simply worn out. Here is a final drive that is typical of what is sent in as part of a  core exchange program. Upon opening it for inspection, we discovered that it had a leak that had been neglected. It eventually ran dry of gear oil, resulting in massive damage in the planetary side of the final drive.

In fact, if you look at it from the side you can see that the main bearings are completely shot: the race is completely destroyed and the bearings can be seen from the outside of the  planetary hub.

This next core is sadly beyond hope of repair, and will probably be relegated to the scrap heap or repurposed as a door stop. As you can see, the hub is shattered.

This core also ran out of gear oil, and the main bearing is very badly damaged and jammed. We had some real trouble trying to get it disassembled

This last core was also empty of gear oil. The gears are damaged, the snap ring to the gear hub looks chewed up, and it is suffering from main bearing failure.

Used versus Re-manufactured

When you purchase a used final drive, you don’t know what condition it is in. Unlike used final drives, re-manufactured final drives have been thoroughly cleaned, inspected, evaluated, and re-certified to original manufacturer specifications. In the long run you will save more money by investing in a certified re-manufactured final drive than taking a risk on a final drive that someone else already discarded.

Conclusion: Used Final Drives' Condition is Important

Used final drives aren’t going to be of the same quality as re-manufactured. When you purchase a used one, you may end up with a core that suffered very severe damage and will cost you more in repairs than you can imagine.
